19 SUKKU KUZHAMBU(DRY GINGER CURRY)

  • Since one week everyone at home are with severe cold and cough ... all due to this weather change and allergies...so just made this curry which is good to eat/comforts us when we have severe cold.

  • Ingredients
    Dry ginger - 2 inch piece
    Shallots/Pearl onions - 10 - 12 ( chopped little) OR
    Red onion - 1 big chopped fine
    Garlic - 4 flakes
    Coconut - 1/2 cup grated
    Tamarind - 2 inch piece( Soak in a cup of water for 20 mts and extract pulp)
    Turmeric powder - a pinch
    Sambar powder OR Curry powder - 1 1/2 tbsp
    Salt as needed
    Oil - 1 tbsp

    For tempering:
    Mustard seeds, urad dhal, curry leaves - all few
    Gingelly oil - 1 tbsp

    You can also substitute the use of sambar or curry powder with these fresh masala
    Channa dhal - 1/2 tbsp
    Urad dhal - 1/2 tbsp
    Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
    Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
    Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
    Pepper corns - 1/4 tsp
    Red chillies - 5
    ( Fry all these ingredients with few drops of oil by adding one after the other... cool and grind with other grinding ingredeints)

    Heat 2 drops of oil and fry dry ginger for less than a minute.... cool and grind with coconut to a fine paste( if using fresh masala... add that also and grind together).

    Heat oil in a frying pan and add chopped onions... fry till light brown.... next add garlic flakes and fry together for 2 minutes.... add all the powders( if using powders) and mix well.... then add tamarind pulp... reduce flame and cook till the volume reduces.... next add the ground paste, salt and cup of water... cook till the raw smell leaves for 10 - 12 minutes.
    Temper it with the tempering ingredients and serve with rice.

    Thats really a confort curry..ginger is very effective in cold and cough..my dad used to add ginger in my vegetable juice for the same :)

    Sukku Kulambu is new to me,but I always try to add a small piece of Ginger in curries.

    Thanks Kalai for dropping in... good to add ginger in curries and in the above recipe you can susbtitute dry ginger with fresh ginger also :)

    you know..i love horsegram rasam..i searched here in indian groceries for horsegram..i couldnt find it..looks god padma..you are tempting me by posting rasam with horsegram:)

    Rasam sure tastes great with horsegram Lavanya ... so sad that it is not available near ur place... when u get them try to get more and store in :)
